WELCOME TO THE OLD ABE TAVERN!

All ACWGC officers are welcomed to come in, relax, pick up a copy of the latest newspapers, browse the postings from headquarters and otherwise enjoy the company of their brothers in arms. (Any Rebel officers who want to poke about will first be relieved of their sidearms as a "necessary courtesy"!) Here you can step up to the bar or pull up a chair at one of the tables and admire the rustic trappings of one of the Union Army's most storied fighting forces, The Army of the Tennessee.

The tavern draws it name from the mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, "Old Abe", the bald eagle. "Old Abe" accompanied the regiment from its initial organization in September of 1861 until the end of the war. The 8th Wisconsin became part of the 2nd Brigade, 8th Division, 16th Corps, Army of the Tennessee, which later took the name of "The Eagle Brigade." "Old Abe" rode a specially prepared and ornamented perch and became part of the regiment's color guard. She was tethered to the perch by a 30' cord. For more about "Old Abe" see http://www.baldeagleinfo.com/eagle/oldabe.html.

As commissioned officers of the ACWGC everyone's expected to conduct themselves with manners becoming their profession. It is expected that each will properly dispose of their cigar nips and chaw spittle in the cuspidors provided, and that they exibit an experienced proclivity in holding their liquor. But overly intoxicated or rude behavior will not be tolerated, and the management will not hesitate in calling the Provost Guards at the first sign of trouble. If you'd like to make a posting its a simple exercise to get registered and do your talkin'. But passage through those twin doors labelled "Conference Hall" over there is strictly limited to AotT officers, and the guards have been posted at the AotT Army Staff Headquarters.
