In early 1863, General Grant was faced with 2 obstacles. Grant had a base at Holly Springs. He planned a two-pronged assault in the direction of Vicksburg. Lincoln had written "Vicksburg is the key. The war can never be brought to a close until the key is in our pocket." However, he had a different general in mind to "help"

Guess it may be MG John McClernand as in early '63 he was dreaming about taking Vicksburg alone.
