If I gave you the answer now, we'd lose about six more months of suspense and curiosity. Best to leave the question hanging out there for everyone. But once, again, I will tell you that at one time everyone in the real Army of the Tennessee knew who the "Argonauts" were!

Dave, that's a Hell of a good guess on your part and well displays the analytical, historical mind you've got...but still not correct!

It is now time for a hint, since everyone seems to be stumped. The "Argonauts" first gained their notoriety in the Vicksburg Campaign.

General Meyer < Salute >
I submit this information about the identity of the "Argonauts" (finally!)
Setting out “at eight o'clock on the morning of March 31” (1863), the 69th Indiana under the command of Col. Thomas W. Bennett from Major General Osterhaus's Ninth Division, XIII Corps, Army of the Tennessee, accompanied by “two companies of the 2nd Illinois Cavalry, two mountain howitzers manned by a detachment of the 6th Missouri Cavalry, and an engineer company, bringing 'a long train of pontoons' as well as a number of light yawls, or skiffs, borrowed from the steamboats. They were about 1,000 men in all and would soon be calling themselves the “ARGONAUTS”.
Woodworth, Steven E. Nothing But Victory: The Army of the Tennessee, 1861-1865. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2005. p 317-318

These were the lead toops of the AoTgoing down the west bank of the Mississippi prior to re-crossing the Mississippi enroute to the successful completion of the seige of Vicksburg.

Well, I might have known that it would be our own AAG who would find out who the AoT "Argonauts" were! Neal, you are absolutely correct!

Shoot! Now I'll have to find another stumper, and when I do Neal will be barred from giving out the answer...he's too smart!
