Cornith anniversary October 3rd.

1862 (Friday)
The Battle of Corinth, Mississippi starts. Often called the Second Battle of Corinth, this battle would continue for two days as US Major General William S. Rosecrans’ Army of the Mississippi http://www.battlefieldportraits.com/Com ... ecrans.htm fought CSA Major General Earl Van Dorn’s Army of West Tennesseehttp://www.battlefieldportraits.com/Com ... n_Dorn.htm. Having held Corinth since the end of May, Rosecrans necessarily had to protect his supply lines from Tennessee. With Van Dorn’s army pushing south, towards Corinth, Rosecrans sent his troops to the outer works ringing the north side of the village. After two days of heavy fighting, that would result in nearly 6,800 casualties, Van Dorn would retreat with his army. Rosecrans would be heavily censured by his commander, US Major General Ulysses S. Grant, for not following up his victory with a rapid pursuit of Van Dorn.(i)
