October, 2010, AotT Army Report

General D. S. Walter
General-in-Chief, ACWGC Union Army

General Walter,

It is my pleasure to present to you the October, 2010, Monthly Report of the Union Army of the Tennessee.

As of this date this field army has attached to it a total of fifty officers: thirty-nine active, three currently assigned to the AotT Hospital, five to the detached Ninth Division, and three on Leave of Absence. Col. Steve Trauth requested and received a six-month Leave of Absence. One officer, Col. John Nash, submitted his resignation this month, citing family illness and computer unavailability. And never having duly reported from the UMA after one full month’s grace period and four separate contact attempts, Lt. Sean Luskin was simply dropped from the rolls.

The army conducted its ninth Muster Call since its January re-organization this month with forty of the forty-four “available” officers responding, recording a 91% Muster Report return rate. This is the lowest return recorded for the present calendar year.

The detached Ninth Division currently lists five officers as Out-of-Contact: Brig. Gen. James Evans, Brig. Gen. Richard Orris, Lt. Col. Gabriel Szala, Col. Dan Macnamara and Maj. Gen. Chuck Berdanier. Attempts to contact all five officers regularly have been and will be continued. With no reply from these officers it is, of course, difficult to determine their actual welfare. There now exist six brigade and one divisional vacancies within the AotT OOB.

Of the three officers in the AotT Hospital, Lt. Victor Balaguer and Col. Bill Cassely, are entering their second month in that institution; while Maj. Wayne Lubbert begins his first month.

All three of the XVI Corps divisions turned in 100% Muster Return, and the following records have been noted. Gen. Chuck Jensen’s First Infantry Division scored its eighth consecutive and overall effort, earning the unit its second Meritorious Unit Citation. Col. John Sheffield’s Second Infantry Division and Brig, Gen. John Lytwak’s Third (2nd) Cavalry Division both turned in their third consecutive and seventh overall 100% effort.

For the two corps involved this was the sixth 100% Muster Return for Lt. Gen. Michael Dowling’s XVI Corps.

This army’s activity upon the field of battle greatly accelerated during the month of September! There were thirty-eight AotT games ended in the month, thirty-three battles, two independent maneuvers and three UMA training maneuvers. Eight of the battles resulted in AotT Major Victories, six of them qualifying either in whole or in part for battlefield ribbons. There were six Minor Victories and seven DRAWS. Our Rebel opponents, however, scored twelve Major and three Minor Victories against us.

Maj. Gen. Brent “Rock” Horrocks added more glory to his already superb record by recording three of the army’s Major Victories: HPSCN #047, Hagerstown; HPSCCH #095, Greater Mill Springs; and HPSCV #jf_c1u2.scn, Champion Hill! In the same division Col. Dave Elkin secured a HPSCF Campaign ribbon by accepting the withdrawal of his opponent at Nashville ’64. Lt. Col. Zafer Edjer recorded a MV in HPSCP #08d_HIST, Seven Days; and Lt. Col. Andreas Trommel was the victor in HPSCCH #006P, Perryville.

Lt. Gen. Ian Miller garnered part of a FMV MV at #290 in HPSCG. The following five Minor Victories were recorded: Maj. Gen Joe Bukal in a 24-turn AGEOD-AACW contest; Lt. Col. Zafer Edjer in a 52-turn, HPSCN 2nd Bull Run; Brig. Gen. Pete Russo in a 47-turn HPSCG Brandy Station, Col. Dave Elkin in a 7-turn HPSCCH Chancellorsville, and Brig. Gen. David Swartz in a 19-turn HPSCG July 3rd cavalry action.

Maj. Gen. Joe Bukal completed six games in the month of September, while Maj. Gen. Brent Horrocks and Brig. Gen. Pete Russo each completed five. Lt. Col. Edjer and Brig. Gen. David Swartz each completed four games.

This army will sadly feel the losses of Colonels John Nash and Steve Trauth, both due to personal unavailability. But it is hoped that they may return at some point in the future, along with others of those who have been forced to leave. XV Corps was also heavily hit this month by the non-response of four officers, and efforts are underway to determine their actual status. However, all of this has now led, as of this date, to the creation of seven vacancies within the OOB, a situation of some immediate concern but for which all that could and can be done is being done. Real Life contingencies know no limitations, and can strike both veteran and newer officers without distinction. It is the nature of our club and exactly why we have a Muster Call system; otherwise we should not know who is active and who is not.

There may be future consolidations within the AotT OOB, as there may be expansions. This field army is a living, viable entity, subject to the vicissitudes of attrition and recruitment, just as its Real Life counterpart was. For some of our losses we can account; for others we cannot. We must all remember that we are one short step away from inactive service due to a variety of unavoidable issues. So let us each take pride and satisfaction for the time that we are able to enjoy the conventions and camaraderie of this club as members of the Army of the Tennessee.

This concludes my report. I am, in all respects, courteously yours,
General Jos. C. Meyer, ACWGC UA
Commander, Union Army of the Tennessee
