AAR - HPS Atlanta/Reseca: Disappointing Battle Results

Post by Redlegger »

Good day Officers of the AotS Sirs! <salute>

I report a major Union loss on my end at HPS Atlanta/002-Rocky Face Ridge May 8_weather vs Lt. Col. Charles-Gervais de Pecqueur 2/1/I, ANV.

The battle was a one day hard slog in moderate to heavy rain.
The Georgia mud was the biggest foe.
I take nothing away from Lt. Col de Pecqueur.
He responded timely and had a good strategy, (stay on top of the ridges with limited counter-attacks when the opportunity was very favorable ).
My strategy was to push very hard against the small ridge on the Union right, and over at the far Union left.
All advances were stubbornly slow, (that GA mud coupled with well entrenched Rebs, good leadership, good troops, and a resistance to falling back), but a good call, despite his best efforts I was able to clear that right ridge with minimum losses compared to his medium.
The left was harder, but for the most part a draw in losses.
He gained the Major Victory when he caught one of my divisions rushing between the two ridges and annihilated it.

Despite that, I still believe I fought him to a draw for in the end I had 56, (fifty-six), spiked reb guns in my possession to his 0, (zero), Union.
The problem was that I received no victory points for them.
I am unsure why.
Frustrating as those victory points would have made the battle a draw.
But c'est le geaurre.

I would still redo the strategy of the primary Union push to the far right, modify it on the left to just a holding pattern, and be a bit more careful with moving up through the pass.
I would and am having a rematch with Lt. Col. de Pecqueur.
A fine club member but perhaps a bit wreckless with his guns.

I look to avenge the loss and restore the honor of the AotS in our next engagement.

I submit this to my superiors and peers humbly.

Col. Korotko, that was a very informative and complete battle report! My compliments to you for posting that!

Resaca is a very difficult place for the Union player, especially if it is being played as part of a full campaign. But even as a stand alone scenario it is a definite challenge. I have found that when played as part of a campaign, the Union player can inflict some good losses upon the Rebs with almost certain impunity if he goes to the trouble of massing his 10lb Parrott rifles on the heights of Judah Hill! Such a course of action, however, must be undertaken with a good defense of the hill with the local infantry. For maximum surprise and effect, the rifled guns should be well stacked together and rolled out into final positions on 22,26 and 23,28 at the same time! The approach of the guns should be tediuosly made under full cover from the most shortest and hidden routes up the backside of the hill. This will take some time to execute, but when finally done will present the Union player with an incredible field of fire at a commanding elevation! An unsuspecting Rebel player will have to scramble his people out of harms way or take some crushing casualties, opening up the possibility of a successful infantry assault against Apple Orchard Hill.
