Battle Reports for September

Post by Drex »

Its that time again. Battle reports are voluntary but they do count as a muster and hopefully soon will be worth OBD pts if you post them.

Multi-Player battles: I. Gettysburg"From out of the valley" Corcoran's Legion (2/VIII) versus Whitehead,Wadding,Weir and Pinkham.
Night has fallen after the first day and II and III Corps are withdrawing back to the Arcola P.O. on the Little River Pike.
I Corps is falling back to Beaver Creek. XI Corps is falling back to Broad Run. XII Corps is deploying from the Broad Run up north to Farmwell.
V Corps is moving north from Sudly Springs. Pleasanton and Stahel (cavalry) are blocking the 3 passes through the mts at New Baltimore, Thoroughfare Gap and Hopewell Gap.
We are still holding on to a minor victory but not by much.
2. Campaign Peninsula: Old Tavern (2nd battle). This has been on hold since Roger left but now it has been resurrected. Destefano wants to play but he can't find Kurkimilis or Magnus, his partners, to continue. David Groce and Rusty Hodgkiss are my compatriots in this one. If I remember this battle, V Corps is practically by itself. Since rusty is the commander of V Corps and he sat out the last game, he get plenty of playtime in.
3. Gettysburg: Scenario 007 versus Strickler, Drott and Medeiros. Dusk is coming after the first day. Casusalties are almost non-existent as the Rebs circle their wagons,it seems, west of Gettysburg. By eliminating a day of battle, they have conserved their ammo at the expense of having superior numbers. Now we have I and XI Corps facing them from the east, III corps marching up to the right flank from Middle Creek and XII Corps approaching their left flank via the Hannover road. II corps has arrived and will join II Corps but it will be sometime tomorrow morning before they arrive. V and VI Corps will arrive tomorrow then we will go on the offensive.
4. Gettysburg: Block the Crossings- a Summer Manuever with Corcoran's Legion agains the Catamounts (or Mounting a Cat). I and XI Corps are advancing north toward Hagerstown on separate but converging roads. the Rebs have been spotted in the Northwest by our cavalry scouts but no contact as yet.
Single Battles:
1. Antietam Campaign versus Roy Purcell- the final battle, Antietam, and I;ve got it up to a draw so far. Hooker on their left, is resting after taking the brunt of the mornings battle. XII corps is attacking across the hidden ford in the south but it is being hotly contested. II corps and some units of V Corps are pressing in the middle. The artillery is doing some hot work here. I've lost more men but he has lost more guns.
2.Corinth Campaign versus Roy Purcell : The final battle, Corinth- Roy is holding back in the north where I am strongest and moving troops around to my rear. I have detached a whole division to meet this threat but Corinth has a long perimeter and many roads leading into the city.
3. Gettysburg: The Warrenton Collision versus Sasha Marx. we started the game but he hs dropped the ball I guess. I have sent him an email. the game just started so no description on this one.
4.Chancellorsville Campaign: The battle of Chancellorsville,2nd day has arrived and after beating up on me in the first day, he realizes that Birney has activated and has started moving back. He tried attacking XI Corps(fixed) but I was able to acare him off with the few units he activated. I wonder if he knows that Meade's division has entered the map behind him? Still a draw.
5.Chickamauga:the battle of Stones River (editted to 1000 turns)- This will be a battle to the finish. No exits can be used. My Right Wing has crossed upriver and is fighting Reb Cavalry. A division of this wing discovered a hidden ford and is outflanking his present cavalry position. My Center Wing has arrived and is moving south toward Murfreesboro and will attack in the, well, center.
6. High Tide Cemetery Division Championship Match- against Doug Shaw, of course. I shouldn't even be here but it will be fun. We are each writing turn by turn descriptions with screenshots that we will turn into Ned at the end. If Doug squashes me like the smart money predicts, maybe we can use the battle as a "What not to do" lesson for new cadets.
That's all folks!

I got only a hard fight in Gettysburg (2nd day) against Brig Gen Blair and it seems like a draw if I now can´t break his lines.

And I´m fighting a little campaign Ozark against Maj Gen Jensen.

Also the VI.Corps is fighting a Multiplayer-battle in Little Yellow Creek.

Standalone HPS Battle of Chickamauga was completed with my opponent surrendering after about 68 turns and I took a minor victory because a minor was secured but there was still a long ways to go to achieve a major. I fought him hard along the traditional lines of Chickamauga Creek on the first day. As the day ended and overnight, I shifted my lines so that I abandoned practically all of the VP hexes and concentrated my army to the southern portions of the battlefield because my lines had been too thin on the first day which gave him the initiative. Overnight, he also shifted his army from the southern portions of the battlefield to the central portions. That allowed me to gain control of the battlefield east of Chickamauga Creek and concentrate most of my army against only a portion of his since most of his army was trampling through the woods where I was but wasn’t any more. I was able to outflank his center about 3 times (yes, his center, as he rotated his line to meet my army and he would think that he had found a flank but I would have another division or brigade hidden in the woods out of sight that would fall upon his exposed charges). Casualties got to be pretty high for the Rebs and he started losing regiments due to isolation so he surrendered. That was my 100th victory in the club (okay, it was the OFFICIAL 100th victory since there was a stretch in the club when we couldn’t register games and thus those results were lost forever).

Started a Siege of Nashville battle off of the HPS Chickamauga disk (scenario 105). It is at turn 4 and I would rather be Union than Confederate in this one. The Rosecrans line had troops dispersed to face assaults from more directions than the Confederates are actually coming from so I’ve shifted and concentrated my line to take advantage of impassable creeks. He should be able to fight his way across them but hopefully at such an expense that he won’t be able to recover from it.

Have a Prairie Grove battle from the HPS Ozark disk ongoing. It is almost time for my army to release and thank goodness because I have already sacrificed just about all of my small cavalry detachments in order to slow him down. We’ll see how it goes as it appears that I’ll have to drive him almost completely off the battlefield in order to win by regaining control of the large VP hexes that are now in his rear. I’ll have a lot of time in order to do it.

Have a HPS Gettysburg campaign that has resumed at Brandy Station. My opponent had taken leave for the summer but has now returned. Just normal positioning and feeling out one another has occurred thus far and I expect a draw to be agreed upon after a few more turns unless one of us makes a mistake.

Have a standalone Battle of Gettysburg (scenario 007) from HPS Gettysburg at about turn 35 which is at about 4:20 in the afternoon of the first day. He has swept me off of Cemetery Hill and Culp’s Hill and Early’s Division has just slammed into XII Corps along the Lower Dutch Road. It’s all Confederate on the first day but he won’t take the Round Tops as I am counting the turns until he runs out of daylight. He has a minor victory by about 300 points so I’m not worried yet. He continuously did a good job of trying to outflank me and that caused me to use cavalry on my flanks and thus I’ve suffered far more cavalry losses than normal (about 985 dropped from their saddles).

At long last, glorious victory for the AotS vs. the AoA. The tournament game with General Pinkham is officially over, with the AotS gaining a tardy MV. I was able to pull General Pinkham farther north than I think he should have gone, despite the fact that he had a strong position, behind a river, with limited crossings. With some feinting toward his left and center, I was able to amass General Buell's army, along with 3 of Grant's divisions across from, and extending beyond his left flank. Once the main attack was launched, the reb line collapsed, losing a full division, and more guns than I could count. With 10 turns left General Pinkham had had enough, and called it quits. I'm not sure if that would have affected the outcome of the tournament, but I am happy nonetheless.

I have started a Shiloh Campaign vs. General Pinkham at his request. (Any pointers and advice would be appreciated, as this is the first go-round for me with the Shiloh game.)

Also, a long lost friend, Kerry Vannada has returned, and the two of us have started an Antietam campaign, beginning at South Mountain.

Tim Isgro continues to pound me back to Malvern Hill. As I have pulled out around Glendale, Jackson has arrived, and is chewing up my rear guard. Ammo is running out with the rear guard units, and things are desperate. I would be surprised if I don't lose at least a regiment or two during this retreat. However, we are still at a draw as of of 6pm on the first of two days, and all of the guns have made it back to Malvern Hill, as well as all of the army, save Slocum's rear guard. If he can be induced to attack me at Malvern Hill, I expect to beat him up badly. If he does not, I am planning to attack Jackson's left, or eastern flank with II Corps, and his front with VI and III Corps. We'll see how it plays out.

I think that's about it for me.

Gen. Ringbloom, Sir,

I wish to report that I am still active on the field of the battle as well as on the training ground and the Union Military Academy.
My Campaign Corinth battle in Memphis continues with the Rebels like cockroaches in a hovel - everywhere one looks. Bridges and Fords are being forced by the Rebs but brave Union reinforcements are disembarking hourly, and Gen Grant remains confident that he will defeat the traitors.

My multiplayer games, as previously reported, continue without major incident.

I am pleased to report that in the divisional Summer Manuevers battle against Col Cox of the Catamount Division of VI Corp, I have won a major victory (playing as the Union) and a minor victory (playing as the Rebs.)

Finally I have begun another UMA training game.

I remain, Sir, your obedient servant,

No wonder I might be having trouble with this battle as it ain't Prairie Grove but the Battle of Pea Ridge. And I thought that the Prairie Grove strategy was working so well ...

I'm in two MP games, both of which Drex has already described. Still early at Block the Crossings, and not much contact with the enemy yet for my troops at From Out of the Valley...

(Snort) huh? Time to report again already? Can't get no friggin' rest, mutter, mutter.

Let's see: Finished by Gettysburg campaign against Gen. Paul Kenney with a Union Major on his retreat from the Big Pipe Creek battlefield. Caught up with him northwest of Gettysburg. Seeing as he faced a real pounding, he offered his sword after several hours and the beginning of real infantry engagement. We're now taking up an Atlanta campaign, are at Rocky Face, and he's got an early lead.

Terry Dancer has made it back to the club, and I've got a Corinth campaign going with him. I took a minor victory against his cavalry at Jackson. (Remember our discussions, Dierk, about whether the Union can win this one? It can, even against an experienced opponent.) Now I'm attacking Ripley, very early stages of that battle.

In our Out of the Valley MP, it's nighttime, and we're repositioning for the morning. Should be a very interesting second day. Our cavalry commander made up for errors early in the match, and we're now even on cav casualties. Still down on infantry, and our force is fairly dispersed, still.

As reported elsewhere, I won a mirror match against Lt. Simonovitch in our Great Summer Maneuver. He fights above his field grade, however, and I expect he'll give the Rebs a rough time of it over the next few years.

In our Getting to Know You maneuver, it's still early, no fighting yet. Since our opponents can all read this posting, I'll refrain from discussing our positions.

I think that's it, but this soldier's getting older, so I can't guarantee that. G'way. (Snore)
